Paladino's 1994 Just west of loop, in the old fruit market district and not 6 blocks from the United Center, Paladino's was a pioneer in urban renewal of this area. Do to development the district is almost unrecognizable today.
A good indication of the state of the neighborhood is the condition of the sidewalks. They are a good 70 to 80 years old. Gutting is complete. To the right of the picture on the first floor is a new window bank for the booth seating and a door that leads to the second floor pizzeria for delivery drivers.
The first unveiling, construction barricades are down, all the new windows are in and the store front ready for the last coats of paint.
Myself and Bobby Paladino stand at the entrance, a revolving door. The bank of doors to the left serve as the entrance to sidewalk seating. The store front was built on an all new footing.
Bobby and his partner, Jimmy Higgins stand next to the restaurant's sign just before it is boomed in place. What do you think about those names: Bobby and Jimmy? Perfect for Chicago, just like the name of the restaurant.
Up the sign goes!
They're figuring out where to anchor the sign so that it doesn't interfere with the awning to be installed.
He's smiling because it's Friday, he's tightening the last bolt and thinking about and Old Style beer.
The awning is up. To create the rusty look the metal is acid treated. Now ready for the grand opening, this photo shows the extent of the restoration including the city's contribution, new sidewalks and asphalt.
Paladino's, er Millennium as it looks today.
